Good Nutrition & Physical Activity

Every day choices about what you eat and drink, how much screen time and sleep you get, and how you move, impact your health and quality of life. Healthful choices play a major role in preventing and treating health problems—such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. By focusing on good nutrition and physical activity, you can reduce your risks, improve academic performance, decrease stress, have stamina to succeed at sports/hobbies, and feel better physically and mentally. Consider making these positive changes for a lifetime of healthy habits:

  • Eat breakfast most days of the week
  • Get at least 60 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week
  • Practice portion control
  • Drink no more than 1 juice/pop each day
  • Limit screen time to no more than 2 hours of TV, smart phone or video games
  • Eat 5 servings of fruits/vegetables a day
  • Eat fewer meals outside your home
  • Learn skills to create tasty meals to share and enjoy
  • Eat less “junk” food

Set goals that are achievable and fit with your lifestyle. Small changes can have a huge healthful effect. USDA ChooseMyPlate MyWins (2020) suggests starting with small changes to make healthier choices you can enjoy.

Build your own

Instead of a diet overhaul, make small changes to what you eat and drink that will work for you now and in the future.

Take one day at a time

Sometimes things don’t go as planned, even with the best of intentions. If you miss one day or one milestone for your goal, don’t give up!

Be active your way

Pick activities you enjoy! If you focus on having fun or learning a new skill that interests you, you will be more likely to stick with it.

Team up

Find a friend with similar goals—swap healthy recipes and be active together. Staying on track is easier with support and a cheerleader.

Celebrate successes

Think of each change as a “win” as you build positive habits and find ways to reach your goals. Reward yourself—you’ve earned it!
